Virtual Lesson-April 24, 2012
Tolerance-"A fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc. differ from one's own."
Quickwrite-jot down your thoughts-have you ever been bullied or watched someone else become a victim of a bully? How did it make you feel? Did anyone do anything to stop it? Should they?
This week marks the anniversary of the shooting at Columbine High School. The objective of this lesson is to look at what happens when people are not tolerant of others. We just finished a screen play that dealt with the effects of discrimination and segregation in the south and in college basketball. Earlier in the year we read a novel, Touching Spirit Bear, in which the main character was a bully. With the new Anti-Bullying law, and learning about the Holocaust next year, we need to dealve deeper into our understanding of tolerance, bullying, and the long term and serious consequences when tolerance of others is not practiced.
Step #1-Please view the following links. Some are news reports, some are lyrics and poems, and some are videos.....

Step #2-After viewing the links, write a cause/effect essay. Use bullying or lack of tolerance as the cause. The effect would be what damage is done-you can use examples from your personal life, things you have read or watched, or events from history-like slavery, segregation, the Holocaust, teen suicides, violence, etc. Make sure your writing has a clear beginning, middle, and end. I highly recommend introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Make sure to use voice, examples and details, correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. Start your piece by using the graphic organizer provided below. Then, type your essay.

Step #3-When finished, write an original piece of poetry inspired from this lesson.
Step #4-Finally, create a Bully/Tolerance WORDLE.
Go to http://www.wordle.net/ and create your own collage. The frequency of the words entered determines the size of the words on the page. The following link includes step-by-step directions for wordle......
